Warm, bright sunshine greeted the large numbers of racegoers who turned up for our first meeting of the year on Monday 13th May. Our new building housing the jockeys changing rooms, weighing room, media room and secretary’s office was the focus of much attention.
Next up was the Knockcroghery Handicap which went to Glenburnie by way of the Ger Lyons trained Johnny Drama. Making virtually all the running, he never looked in danger under Colin Keane and was pushed clear in the final furlong to win by an impressive 7 lengths.
Third race on the card was the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden and this was won by the Billy Lee ridden, Willie McCreery trained Tipitena who came with a late run up the rails to see off the Willie Mullins trained Royal Illusion. Having previously run respectfully in a Cork listed race she will again have her sights raised as the trainer told the waiting press corp that her next race is likely to be the Munster Oaks Gr.3.
The final flat race of the day was the Roscommon Handicap and this went the way of the John McConnell trained, Ross Coakley
Our first race of the season over jumps, the Connaughton Auctioneers Handicap Hurdle went like our first flat race to Dermot Weld this time with the Donagh Meyler ridden Lake Takapuna. The 3/1 favourite overcame a mistake at the last to beat Iknowwhereiamnow.
The Follow Us On Facebook Maiden Hurdle went to the Noel meade trained, Sean Flanagan ridden Jerandme who got the better of favourite Warlike Intent in the final furlong. Jerandme won a bumper here last year and the Azamour gelding clearly has a liking for the track and good ground.
The final race of the evening was the Kepak INH Flat Race and all eyes here were on Faugheen’s half brother Osmotic trained by Gordon Elliott and ridden by Jamie Codd for Gigginstown Stud. Having finished 4th on soft ground on his debut in Limerick he was allowed go off at 5/2 Fav but the extra 3 furlongs here really played to his staying strengths and he came away for an impressive 9 length win from Tecumseh Sherman, who himself made a promising debut. Both could be horses to watch for the future.
Music in the main bar after racing came from The Usual Suspects.
We hope that a good night was had by all and we look forward to
