Racing is booming in the west of Ireland and if the first day attendance at Roscommon’s opening fixture of the season on the 8th of May is anything to go by, the popular venue should enjoy a fine year.

Roscommon Racecourse Manager Michael Finneran spends endless hours producing a wonderful racing surface and we have seen some top performers cut their teeth at Roscommon. The fact that Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott, Dermot Weld, Ger Lyons, Aidan and Joseph O’Brien all bring good horses to Roscommon, is a testament to the hard work which goes on behind the scenes and the Committee continues to upgrade facilities to ensure that the race-goer’s experience is a positive one.
Sandra Hughes plays a major role at Roscommon, ensuring that owners and sponsors are well catered for and Roscommon Racecourse is pretty active on social media, so do get in touch.
It is worth pointing out that all the major figures in racing mingle freely with racegoers, so feel free to say hello, ask for a photograph/autograph. They will be only too happy to oblige and it is a wonderful opportunity in particular for the younger racing fans to meet their heroes.
The feature event of the two-day fixture is the thetote.com Connacht National on Tuesday June 12th. This race is over three miles and it looks an ideal trial for the Galway Plate and it will attract a classy field. The Dermot Hughes Cars Rated Novice Hurdle is the main supporting race on the day.
The best turned out prizes will be sponsored by YK Signs, Athleague, which is always a welcome addition to any card, as it goes to the hard-working grooms and stable staff who spend long hours attending to their horses. OCR Waste Management sponsor the handicap hurdle on the same day.
Foran Equine sponsor the €20,000 two year old maiden on the 11th of June. There is also €25,000 fillies handicap hurdle sponsored by the Irish Stallion Farms and the EBF. Connaughton Auctioneers and Hydro Water Treatment also sponsor on Monday.
Our best turned out prizes on Monday, 11th June, are sponsored by Glamorous Dogs, (Keshia Casey) Fuerty.
“After a very wet spring, we have been blessed to get some wonderful warm weather over the last few weeks and the track is in super condition. We have worked hard here over the last few years to improve our facilities and we intend to do a bit more in due course,” stated Racecourse Manager Michael Finneran.
“We have a special offer for our next flat fixture (11th of June) and you can bring a friend in with you for just €5 and we think that represents great value. Our flat meetings are always well supported by some of the best trainers in the world,” he added.
“We will ensure that the jumping horses have lovely safe ground and we will water the track if we need to, but ideally we’d like to let mother nature look after that for us. But we have everything in place and we hope to have large crowds for our all fixtures this season.’
As always there will be music in the Main Bar after the second last race on both evenings provided by Billy Garvin.
Update (10/06/18): Due to a race divide Monday’s first race get under way at 5.30pm. Tuesday’s Meeting is set to begin at 6pm.
