It was a long winter. But with the racing season locally about to commence, it will hopefully be the start of a long summer of great racing, great weather and great enjoyment.
The first meeting of the 2018 Roscommon Races season is on Tuesday next, May 8th. The opening race gets underway at 5:40 pm and it is a mixed card of flat and national hunt Racing.
If you rewind the clocks to this time last year, it’s remarkable to think that workers at the racecourse were watering parts of the track. By late summer, heavy rainfall fell incessantly. It made for practically a two-season winter. With the ground so soft, it wasn’t possible to put machinery on the track, which reduced the amount of work planned over the winter months. But there has been good grass growth in recent times and the manager is very happy with the shape the course is in ahead of next Tuesday.
Commenting earlier Racecourse Manager Michael Finneran said “There has been a few hints of spring thankfully in the last few weeks and this has been timely. Everything is looking well and we’re eagerly counting down the days to the first meeting”.
“The board have put in the hard work behind the scenes, we have our loyal sponsors back on board and we look forward to meeting our loyal followers, and new ones, at the opening meeting,” Mr. Finneran added.
Race sponsors for the meeting are The Irish Stallion Farms EBF , MyITDepartment.ie and Kepak; expect many guests of Kepak to be in attendance on the evening. The Best Turned Out prize is sponsored by Hamrock’s Bar and Lounge, Athleague.
Horse racing has experienced a lot of change since the downturn in the economy but a number of areas have responded strongly. In the 2017 figures released by the HRI earlier this year, it showed that both flat and national hunt entries are up 6%, while the average field size has increased. The average attendance is remaining steady at 3,500 while the total tote betting has increased.
In addition to great Racing next Tuesday there will be music in the Main Bar after the second last race with The Usual Suspects.
